چکیده

What is Nasonia? A small (2–3 mm) parasitoid wasp that oviposits in the pupae of flies (but not those of Drosophila!). This hymenopteran occurs naturally in bird nests and at carcasses. Three species are known: the cosmopolitan N. vitripennis and two endemic North American species, N. giraulti and N. longicornis. Nasonia is extremely easy to culture on commercially available host pupae, it has a short generation time (15 days at 25oC) and can be maintained in diapause for over one year.

A major role for zygotic hunchback in patterning the Nasonia embryo.

Developmental genetic analysis has shown that embryos of the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis depend more on zygotic gene products to direct axial patterning than do Drosophila embryos. In Drosophila, anterior axial patterning is largely established by bicoid, a rapidly evolving maternal-effect gene, working with hunchback, which is expressed both maternally and zygotically. Here, we focus o...

Comparative analysis of nuclear tRNA genes of Nasonia vitripennis and other arthropods, and relationships to codon usage bias.

Using bioinformatics methods, we identified a total of 221 and 199 tRNA genes in the nuclear genomes of Nasonia vitripennis and honey bee (Apis mellifera), respectively. We performed comparative analyses of Nasonia tRNA genes with honey bee and other selected insects to understand genomic distribution, sequence evolution and relationship of tRNA copy number with codon usage patterns. Many tRNA ...

In Vitro Cultivation of the Hymenoptera Genetic Model, Nasonia

The wasp genus Nasonia is a genetic model with unique advantages for the study of interspecific differences, including haplodiploidy and interfertile species. However, as a parasitoid, Nasonia is confined within a fly host, thus restricting direct observations and manipulation of development over time. Here, we present the first in vitro cultivation method for this system that decouples Nasonia...

An optimized approach to germ-free rearing in the jewel wasp Nasonia

Development of a Nasonia in vitrogerm-free rearing system in 2012 enabled investigation of Nasonia-microbiota interactions and real-time visualization of parasitoid metamorphosis. However, the use of antibiotics, bleach, and fetal bovine serum introduced artifacts relative to conventional rearing of Nasonia. Here, we optimize the germ-free rearing procedure by using filter sterilization in lieu...

Reproductive strategies under multiparasitism in natural populations of the parasitoid wasp Nasonia (Hymenoptera).

Parasitoid Nasonia wasps adjust their progeny sex ratio to the presence of conspecifics to optimize their fitness. Another trait under female control is the induction of offspring diapause. We analysed progeny sex ratios and the proportion of diapausing offspring of individual Nasonia females in host patches parasitized by two species, Nasonia vitripennis and Nasonia giraulti, in North American...

High-throughput olfactory conditioning and memory retention test show variation in Nasonia parasitic wasps

Most of our knowledge on learning and memory formation results from extensive studies on a small number of animal species. Although features and cellular pathways of learning and memory are highly similar in this diverse group of species, there are also subtle differences. Closely related species of parasitic wasps display substantial variation in memory dynamics and can be instrumental to unde...
